Measurements & Mathematics: Why They Matters

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Allah Azawajalla Al-Waduud wants humans to know and understand that all things that HE created are all with measurements. And they are all designed with balance. Human has been warned about the danger if these creations go imbalance.

As a human being, I would say, measurements are numbers. That also explains the reason why  Allah quantify all HIS creations through measurements. If I could understand it, so are other humans. That is a lot of numbers. Measurements or numbers is the language that human brain (logic and reasoning) can understand and comprehend in sense-making to the existence of Allah and all of HIS creations. And that’s including us, the human – the measurement of each part of our physical body, and the metaphysics. The external and internal organs as well as the spiritual components.

Allah’s creations serve a specific purpose. Through measurements Allah wants us to understand the implications of our good deeds and wrongs doings to Allah, to ourselves, to other humans and to nature. These are all calculated by the two Angels by our sides. Since measurements are the language that we understood and be able to calculate, they are our guide to evaluating whether we are an underachiever, or we have reached the limits or goes beyond limits. But then this measurement should be interpreted within the correct context, i.e. with the standard sets by Allah Al-Khabiir rather than the standard sets of the human.

All creations are with measurements. God measurements are balanced. These plants – the flowers, the leaves, the stems, the branches, etc. are with the perfect design to meet their need to survive and strive in their ecological system and current environment.
The word “measurement” in the Al-Quran triggers my curiosity. Why Allah wants us to know that over and over again? I have been thinking of this word and its meaning for months!
Allah creates all creations and HE creates them with measurements. Allah taught this fact to human through the Qalamullah (Al-Quran) and sent down the Prophet Muhammad saw and other 24 Prophets to disseminate, remind, reinforce, guide and give examples for clarifications. Through the Qalamullah, Allah has asked us all humans to read, to ponder, to seek evidence and practice as well as to diffuse them to others. The following is a list of verses in Al-Quran (English translation by Yusuf Ali), on the creations and humans’ rezky (sustenance) that Allah designs with measurement:
  • And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable, and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance (with measurement). (Al Hijr: Surat 15, Ayat 20)
  • ... the rains from the sky that flow into the valley with measures … (Ar Ra’ad: Surat 13, Ayat 17)
  • And there is not a thing but its (sources and) treasures (inexhaustible) are with Us, but We only send down thereof in due and ascertainable measures. (Al Hijr, Surat 15, Ayat 22)
  • He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth: no son has He begotten, nor has He a partner in His dominion: it is He Who created all things and ordered them in due proportions. (Al Furqan, Surat 25, Ayat 3)
  • If Allah were to enlarge the provision for His Servants, they would indeed transgress beyond all bounds through the earth; but He sends (it) down in due measure as He pleases: For He is with His Servants Well-acquainted, Watchful. (27) Ash Shura, Surat 42, Ayat 27)
  • Verily, all things have We created in proportion and measure. (Al Qamar, Surat 54, Ayat 50)

Mathematics are based on numbers and assumptions. Therefore,  the measurements of Allah’s creation could be understood and comprehend through mathematics. That explains why mathematics has the ability to explain phenomena. Research works departed from a priori theory or a combination of theories. The theory (or theories) guides researchers to collect data as evidence using appropriate methodologies to prove whether the theory at hand is working. Most of the collected data (or the evidence) are huge in size, researchers required a simple strategy to summarize and to make sense of their data. That is where the manual method of analyzing the data has evolved to sophisticated methods, and more statistical software packages are introduced. All statistical software packages are built upon cognitive reasoning with a combination of mathematical logics, assumptions, and conditions. Like MPlus, SPSS, Stata, Jump, and SAS &  R (SAS & R are the least statistical softwares that I am able to understand and use presently) as well as much more. Subhanallah. Allahuakbar.

However, there are still limitations to the current logic of mathematics. Apparently, these logics of mathematics are created by humans. There are much more areas in the creation of Allah Al-Khabiir left unexplored and unexplained. Allah knows best.

(Surah Al-Iqraq (1-5):

Translation for Surah Al-Iqraq, verses 1 to 5:

I seek refuge in Allah (swt) from the accursed Shaiytaan
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Read! in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created― (1) Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: (2) Read! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful― (3) He Who taught (the use of) the Pen― (4) Taught man that which he knew not (5).

Note:  I wrote this short article because I believe what Zinsser (1988; 2006) was advocating at his time, Writing is Learning. He claimed that writing is a thinking process. This also means thinking process infers to learning. When a person read and writing, he/she facilitates his/her thinking process thus he/she is in a learning curve. So Zinsser viewed these elements — writing, reading, and thinking–as fundamental to the learning process.

Surah 41,Surah Fushshilat (Yang dijelaskan), ayat 9 hingga 12.
Demikianlah ketentuan Yang Maha Perkasa lagi Maha Mengetahui.

Title in English: The Creation of Sky and Earth
Text in English: Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds, has created this entire universe and the world in six (6) days. Allah began His creation by creating this world in two (2) days and then He set on the mountains standing firm in two (2) days. And then Allah bestowed blessings on the earth and sustenance  to all living creators on earth according to due proportion in four  (4) days. Following the earth creation, Allah designed the sky originated from the smoke! Allah commanded  the earth and the sky to service and both came together willingly. And then Allah designed the sky into seven layers and each layer with specific duty and command.  Allah adorned the nearest sky (or the lowest) to the earth with lights (stars) and HE rendered it inviolable. The mentioned ‘day’ here is not the measurement of a day used by humankind but it refers to period or time, or age or moment. One thing for definite is that this ‘one day’ that Allah used could be 8 billions years of earth time or more.

This page contains selected verses from Allah Azza Wajjal in the Al-Quran that catch my heart deeply. Different rounds I recite the Al-Quran, different verses capture my heart in a profound way. The Islamic scholars say Al-Quran has endless layers of meanings to persons who recite it. The meanings are depending on the life phase that he/she is currently at and life struggles.  Allah knows best.

Discover Yourself!

Aaid Al-Qarni reminds me the reader, You’re created uniquely. The inner self in you wants to own an identity and personality that you alone owns it. Discovering yourself will not be achieved by imitating others while you’re growing up. If you do, you will be a miserable person. As Emerson dramatically claimed, “… imitation is suicide. …”!  But how to start from zero to discover yourself? Don’t you agree that we have to start somewhere! I guess imitation is the most common way people learn to create a personality that they called their own because they don’t know where the journey should begin.

What epochs of a life journey that you have discovered yourself? Is there only one or many? is there once in a life time or many times as you walk the life? Share your thoughts so I can learn and better understand how for me to discover my full potentials.

‘Aaidh ibn Abdullah al-Qarni suggested a simple way discovering yourself. According to his description, I need ‘to read’ myself to know myself. From here, I will get to know my mission in life, weaknesses and strengths as well as the limitations. With all these qualities (and the improvement of these elements) that I have, I will use all of them to strive to accomplish my mission in life.

This post is organic. I would love to proceed Discover Yourself to facilitate my journey, a non-native English speaker to be a communicative writer. It is so fundamental to my dreams and discovering my true self.

What is it with TODAY?

What is it with TODAY? …

Today Donald Trump is the elected president of the United States. My housemate woke up with a loud cry! “Kak Jana! Wake-up, wake-up, Trump won the election”. She continued to express her uncertainty (or I would say more of anxiety) of her safety during her 4-year stay to finish the Ph.D. program, here in the United States. Well, I don’t blame her for that feeling, my anxiety is low since my finish line is already at the corner.

Am I surprise with the news? NO.

Somehow, I had this intuition last Spring (2016). I expressed this concern during a diversity panel discussion on racial issues on campus. I told the audience (who are all the respectable members of the faculty) that the political climate and the direction it was taking all Americans were not good signs. Whatever it is, it’s over … at least four years from now.  I guess the voting citizens had to decide on someone to lead the country. It must be hard for all  Americans to live with the decisions that they have made and those who are affected by the majority decision.

Nevertheless, I wish all the best to the Americans on their new 4-year journey with President Trump. My wish is that they will hold on tight to their Statue of Liberty!

I’m telling myself the future has not come. Do not worry; you have not seen tomorrow. I’m also chanting to myself, keep doing what you’re doing and be steadfast. Like the (adapted) words of Aaid al-Qarni, (2005:33) ” Do you think it’s wise plucking fruits before they become ripe? “. Absolutely not!

My Mantra to deal with the uncertainty of tomorrow!

I’m Walking the Bridge

It took me almost two years to discover the key to release me from my misery.  Do you want to know what the key is?

I Forgive Myself

Yes, you hear me right. ” I forgive myself. I forgive all my weaknesses, my actions, and wrong doings.”  That is the key that releases me from despair. That is the key that fuels my soul with fierce energy to break down the huge wall of anger and nurture an ocean full of forgiveness to those who did me wrong in my entire life.

” I forgive myself .” It sounds so straightforward and easy. However, I wish to tell you that it was a lot harder than I thought but it’s not impossible to achieve. I put trust in Allah, and it became possible. The act of forgiving myself drained my whole energy, but the outcome is heaven!

Goodbye Misery, Hello Success and Happiness ! :)))

I have no regret now. I’m doing it every day. It becomes my practice. The first time was hard, and by each day it becomes easier and easier. Eventually,  now, I’m walking the bridge to my bright future. I’ve said Goodbye to misery, I promise to Allah that I will not turn back to ask the past, how are you! I’m saying hello successes and happiness every day now! Alhamdulillah :)))

The key to success Dunya and Akhirah

What is Calamities?

I am sharing a piece of my story on how one can make a choice to live the life when calamities fall on them. Is a choice really!

Are Calamities Bad? Before today,  I believe calamities or trials are bad, very bad impact on my life. They are killing me, killing me. Softly. Especially the hardest one … or the most difficult yet to come? [ sho sho sho go away evil thoughts! think positive please … my angel whispering to my heart, MasyaAllah La haulawaquata illa billa, Tabarakallah ]  When I think from that perspective, I don’t think I could continue living … how could not I become devastated when there is no light of hope? or the slightest light that leads to hope?

Why did I choose to change the perspective on Calamities? After sometimes, debating with my inner self, I started to alter the perspective on how to view all the disasters that occurred in my life. Because after all, in anything that I do, I have choices to make. I can choose to continue to suffer in this short life if I choose that killing perspective–calamities are evil. The biggest problem with accepting that view, my brain slowly [or is it my heart? Or my soul? to be accurate?] shutdown to choices that I could make. Opportunities do not exist in this view. I know it sounds crazy to you. The heavier the calamities, the faster my brain or my soul shut itself down, closing all my views to doors, shutting the lights of help and hope as well as the light of promising future. And then I become numb. That how one’s perspective or worldview toward life are a critical savior to a happy life.

The Wake-Up Call! After endless struggles of two years, my soul woke up. That was after my soul was floating to a far far away place. I felt I was not able to touch the ground of reality anymore. I had an empty brain for the future. I lived only at the moment. Everyday. Only at the moment. One day at a time. This ‘soul-floating’ went on for months. Months. Almost two years.  I have tried to explain what was going on with myself to all my close friends. None except one friend who understood what was going with me.  She explained to me spiritually. She has helped me out from the distance while I was in Ames and she was in my home country. We are separated by thousands of miles away. Her arguments make sense. She suggested several strategies for me to do daily. Eventually, in a month, I was able to connect with my soul, and then I connect my soul to reality and my brain to the future. It was an unbelievable experience, a painful one that drained my soul. However, a priceless one!

Being A Grateful Person Somehow! However, I’m grateful that Allah has chosen me to experience that, otherwise, I will not understand how a person falls into depression and coming out from it.  I said to myself never being a judgemental person to anyone surrounding me. When I was at my low point of life, many many people were judgmental to my condition. I was unable to explain my conditions according to the language that is understood by many. I agree with wise people say, if you want to get to know your real friends or kind souls, wait when you’re at the lowest. At this very lowest point, you look up on them, and you see who they are at heart!

The New Perspective on Calamities. Since that enlightenment from my friend, I change my perspective towards what it means to me the “Calamities.” Simply put, calamities, are a direct coaching and training from Allah Azzawajalla to engage me as a life long learner.  Calamities are only temporary epochs in my life.  The content is with a new knowledge, new feelings of humility or gratitude, and a new skill that are beneficial for my future adventure. All lessons from Allah are orchestrated into the experiential learning, and all of them are problem-based learning. I will not die because of the calamities. Only death has no solution, so surely calamities have solutions. It’s a matter of time. Right, time heals. And also it’s a matter of strategies and solutions that I use. These life lessons are not only meant to update my knowledge and wisdom on something but also they strengthen my spirituality with Allah Subhanawata’alla in connection to humility and gratitude feelings and life pursuits.

Stay Alert. Allah will not terminate HIS lesson until  I comprehend it in the way HE wants me to be.

Ya Allah. May Allah grants me the knowledge of understanding and practice what I have learned. Amiin Ya Allah, Amiin Ya Rabb. Barakallah fi kum.

Many leaves
Embrace Your Positive Perspective to Walk through the Calamities. Everything will be alright.
